The concept of the “green climate squares for Waltrop” generously unseals the two squares, Herne-Bay-Platz and Platz von Gardelegen, and focuses on sustainable redevelopment.
Despite their very different locations in the town and their different layouts, the two squares have been successfully linked by their characteristic green cushions. The reuse of the clinker brick paving typical of Waltrop’s city center also has a unifying effect, with recreational areas in front of the islands accentuated by the fact that the paving is reinstalled on edge in a herringbone pattern on the long narrow side. This turns the otherwise directionally laid paving into a non-directional urban pavement with a high quality of stay.
Green climate cushions as important elements for the future viability of the city center
As a green climate square, Herne-Bay-Platz is a counterpart to the heavily sealed Raiffeisenplatz, which also serves as a market square. The arrangement of the bicycle pavilion and the access road to the underground parking garage concentrate the urban uses on the northern edge of the square. The green back of the eastern cushion to the bus stop and the street Am Moselbach creates a quiet, green center with a high quality of recreation. The side of the green cushion facing the street Am Moselbach fulfills the function of an additional high-quality waiting area for the bus stop with a large bench element.
The recreational areas are marked by the characteristic herringbone paving.
Unlike Herne-Bay-Platz, Gardelegen’s square is bordered on three sides by buildings, which have an impact and enliven the square with outdoor catering and public uses. This urban and extroverted attitude is reinforced by three green cushions with recreational and functional areas in front of the square center.
As with Herne Bay Square, the existing trees will be preserved wherever possible and integrated into the green cushions. The additional retention space also ensures that existing trees and new settlements are adequately supplied with water and that the square is significantly unsealed. The recreational areas in front of the cushions can be used for different purposes. In the northern area is the sculpture of the eponymous Kiepenkerl. The eastern recreation area integrates the “Stones against forgetting” memorial. In the southern area, a spacious wooden deck and a fountain field create a high-quality and at the same time atmospherically dense recreation area.
