The building plot at Arcostrasse 9-15 is located on the Charlottenburger Ufer, directly on the Spree. A residential complex with ten buildings was built here. Five front buildings and five courtyard buildings on the inner part of the plot. The front and rear buildings are offset from each other and connected by open arcades.
The organizational structure conceived from the street is intersected from the Spree side by the open spaces that flow and diffuse into the courtyards and through the arcades. Flowing in the form of rills becomes the defining theme of the open space. Following the shape, the surfaces accommodate the greened soakaways and generous play areas.
The design is based on the image of tideways, which are created when water flows back from flooded areas. The paths flow through the courtyards from north to south in an organic way and form a contrast to the strongly geometric upward-striving façade of the buildings.
When planning the play areas, emphasis is placed on a lively and stimulating design. The selected play equipment is robust, safe and adds a touch of color to the outdoor space.
The outdoor area of the KITA, with sand and grass play areas, can be freely used by the KITA operator. This is separated from the rest of the residential complex by a coated wire mesh fence with red-flowering climbing plants. The “bouncy island” allows children and adults a visible connection between the two areas and stages children’s play on the trampoline as a highlight in the courtyard. The sand area for small children accommodates a tunnel slide, which is docked to the handrail on the first floor.
A playground with sculptural play elements is being created on the northern lawn. The focus here is on balancing elements for older children. All play areas are connected by acoustic games.
